While Hurricane Helene unleashed its fury last week upon much of Florida’s west coast, the small village of Cortez became a shining example of resilience, standing tall in the face of the storm.

While much of the region dealt with waist-deep floodwaters and widespread power outages, one neighborhood remained a beacon of hope. Hunters Point, a community designed to withstand the most extreme hurricanes, kept its lights on and homes dry, delivering on its promise to safeguard its residents and their future.

Hunters Point is more than a neighborhood, it’s a bold testament to the need for climate adaptation! Built by Pearl Homes with a clear focus on surviving Category 5 hurricanes, the community blends strength and sustainability, utilizing cutting-edge materials alongside solar panels and battery backup systems.

As the surrounding homes fell into darkness, the residents of Hunters Point remained secure with power, their homes fortified by reinforced walls, steel structures, and elevated foundations to stay above the surging floodwaters—proof that we can face climate-driven challenges head-on.

Since welcoming its first residents in 2022, Hunters Point has already survived three major hurricanes: Ian, Idalia, and now Helene. This community represents what is possible when we choose to adapt.

The Climate Adaptation Center recognized this transformative work by honoring Marshall Gobuty as a Climate Champion in 2024. Now, more than ever, we need this kind of foresight and leadership to prepare for the challenges that lie ahead.

On Wednesday, February 12, 2025 at Michael’s On East Ballroom in Sarasota, Florida, the CAC will host the 3rd Annual Climate Champions Awards. Subscribe to our newsletter for upcoming announcements about ticket sales and honorees. You can see all upcoming CAC events here.
